The Ultimate Guide to Shopping for a Wedding Dress

Shopping for your wedding dress is a huge moment in your preparation for the big day. It should be one of the most joyful parts of wedding planning – but without a plan, it can quickly become overwhelming.

There are countless styles, silhouettes and boutiques to explore, and it’s easy to lose your way.

A little preparation makes all the difference. Knowing your budget, your venue and the silhouettes you love before you step into a boutique means you’ll spend your appointments enjoying the experience, not feeling flustered by it.

And with styles evolving fast – think corsetry, basque waists and even multiple outfits for one day – having a clear plan (and some tried and tested wedding dress shopping tips) is how you choose the one.

8 tips for wedding dress shopping

Whether you already have a clear vision or you’re starting with a completely blank canvas, if you want to know how to choose a wedding dress, these need-to-know essentials are the ideal starting point.

They make wedding dress shopping smoother, calmer and a whole lot more fun.

1. Understand how wedding dress styles are changing

Bridal fashion moves quickly, and what felt fresh even twelve months ago may already be giving way to something new.

Recent seasons have seen a real shift towards heritage and romance, with corsetry, lace, delicate detailing and basque-waist gowns all surging in popularity – part of the wider Bridgerton-inspired trend shaping weddings in 2026.

We’re also seeing the rise of the ’wedding wardrobe’, where brides choose two or even three outfits: a ceremony gown, a relaxed dinner look and a show-stopping dress to dance the night away in.

You don’t need to follow any of it, of course. But knowing what’s out there helps you understand your options – and spot the styles that feel truly you.

2. Match your dress to your venue

Your dress and your venue should feel like they belong together. Before you fall for a gown, picture yourself wearing it in the space where you’ll say your vows.

A structured, elegant ballgown is more suited to a grand, formal setting. A flowing, relaxed silhouette feels right at home in a rustic barn or countryside venue. And if you’re marrying outdoors, you’ll want to think about the ground underfoot, the weather and how easily you can move around.

At Heaton House Farm, our blank-canvas barns and multiple ceremony areas suit almost any style, from effortlessly rustic to elegantly luxurious – so your dress can take centre stage whatever you choose.

 3. Get familiar with the main dress silhouettes

Understanding the core silhouettes gives you a clear idea of the different types of wedding dresses and a good starting point for narrowing your search and discussing with bridal gown specialists. The most popular styles include:

4. Know the costs to expect

Wedding dresses come in an enormous range of prices, so it helps to know the averages before you start. You’ll want to factor them into your budget and payment plans for your dream wedding.

In the UK, the average wedding dress costs around £1,500, with most brides spending somewhere between £500 and £2,000. The range is big, but the choice is yours. You can choose to spend as much as you like – if it fits with your plans – or you can absolutely shop for a wedding dress on a budget.

Off-the-peg gowns can be found for a few hundred pounds, while bespoke and designer dresses can run into the thousands (and beyond).

Just remember to budget for the extras, too. Alterations, accessories, veils and cleaning aren’t usually included in the price of the dress itself, and can add a few hundred pounds on top.

Setting a clear budget from the outset – and sticking to it – keeps the experience stress-free and helps your consultant show you dresses within your range.

5. Book your appointments well in advance

Bridal boutiques work on an appointment basis, and the best ones get booked up fast – especially at weekends and during peak season.

Rather than trying to squeeze several stores into a single day, spread your appointments out and give yourself time to reflect between them.

Two or three well-chosen boutiques will tell you far more than a rushed morning dashing between five. Book ahead, plan your route, and leave plenty of breathing room.

6. Choose your shopping companions wisely

Deciding who comes with you matters more than you might think. Traditionally, brides bring a small, trusted group – often a mother, sister, maid of honour or closest friend.

The key word is small. Too many opinions can quickly become overwhelming and pull you in different directions. Choose the people whose taste you trust, who know you well and who’ll champion what you love, rather than steering you towards their own preferences.

A calm, supportive companion or two will make the day far more enjoyable – and help you feel confident in your final choice. Just make sure they bring tissues for when they first see you in that perfect dress.

 7. Make the most of every appointment

A little preparation helps you get the most from your time in each boutique.

Wear comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing and neutral underwear, and bring shoes with a heel height similar to what you plan to wear on the day.

Save inspiration images to your phone so you can show the shop staff the looks you love, and take photos of yourself in each dress so you can compare them later.

Most importantly, be honest with your consultant or shop staff. They’re the experts, and the more they understand about your venue, your style and your budget, the better they can help you find your perfect gown.

8. Keep an open mind (and trust the experts)

Finally, don’t be afraid to try something unexpected. So many brides end up choosing a dress completely different from the one they imagined.

The silhouette you were sure about might not feel right once it’s on, while a style you’d never have picked from the rail could be the one that brings a tear to your eye.

Trust your bridal consultant’s experience, keep an open mind, and give yourself permission to be surprised. When you find the right dress, you’ll simply know.

When should you go wedding dress shopping?

As a general rule, we’d recommend starting your wedding dress search around 12 months before your big day. It’s the sweet spot that gives you plenty of time without feeling rushed.

Ideally, you want this kind of time because lots of wedding dresses are made to order, and it can take four to six months (sometimes longer) for a gown to arrive after you’ve placed your order.

On top of that, you’ll want to allow time for alterations, which usually happen in the couple of months before the wedding.

Should you go sooner? You certainly can. If you love being organised, or you’ve set your heart on a particular designer with longer lead times, browsing 14 to 18 months ahead is absolutely fine.

Just bear in mind that styles – and your own vision – can shift over a longer engagement, and your body may change slightly, so you don’t want to commit too early.

And if your timeline is shorter, don’t panic. Plenty of boutiques offer off-the-peg gowns and sample sales for brides on a tighter schedule, and many can accommodate a wedding in less than 12 months. It simply means being a little more flexible and decisive.

The real key, whatever your timeline, is to sort your venue first. Your venue shapes your style, your season and your whole vision – so with that locked in, you’ll shop for your dress with total clarity.

Find the venue, shop the dress

Your wedding dress is one of the most personal choices you’ll make, and with a little research ahead and these tips to help you shop, the experience should be a fun, emotional and memorable part of your wedding.

Get your budget, your timeline and your venue in place first, and the rest becomes wonderfully simple.
