How to Plan a Relaxed Wedding

When it comes to a traditional wedding, the pomp and ceremony, the fancy outfits and the sit down, three-course meals are not for everyone. For many couples, they’re just too formal.

They want something less constrained by conventions and more focused on comfort and joy. A more relaxed wedding day.

A relaxed wedding is simply one where the focus is on enjoying the day rather than ticking off rigid traditions or sweating every tiny detail. Think easy-going vibes, plenty of breathing space in your timings and a celebration that feels true to you.

Planning one isn’t all that different from planning any wedding. The secret is starting with choices that keep the pressure off and reduce the stress.

6 tips for planning the ultimate relaxed wedding

A relaxed wedding doesn’t happen by accident. The calmest, most carefree days are usually the result of a little thoughtful planning behind the scenes.

1. Give yourself plenty of time

Nothing kills a relaxed vibe quite like a last-minute rush. The earlier you start, the more breathing room you’ll have to make decisions calmly, compare your options and avoid that panicky scramble as the big day approaches.

You don’t need years – plenty of couples plan a beautiful wedding in less than 12 months – but giving yourself space to plan at a gentle pace means you’ll have the time to talk to your partner and decide exactly what you do and don’t want.

You won’t feel rushed into having a “receiving line” or “formal vows” because someone told you it was traditional and you didn’t have time to think about other options.

 2. Choose the right people (and the right suppliers)

Your wedding party, your suppliers and your nearest and dearest all set the tone for your day. Surround yourself with people who bring calm rather than chaos, those who’ll happily lend a hand without adding to the stress.

The same goes for your suppliers. A relaxed day relies on a team you can trust to get on with things, leaving you free to soak up every moment. The best suppliers will work with you to bring your plans for a relaxed wedding to life. They will:

3. Find a venue that does the hard work for you

The right venue can take the weight of logistics off your shoulders entirely. A relaxed wedding means you don’t need to be constrained by a traditional religious setting or a corporate style set-up.

Instead, think gardens, farms, fields and barns for your wedding day.

At Heaton House Farm, we have the ceremony areas (both indoors and out), the barns and the space to let you plan your wedding however you’d like… and plenty of room to make sure you’re not stuck to rigid timetables.

4. Keep your plans flexible

A relaxed wedding leaves room to breathe. Avoid over-scheduling your day with back-to-back activities and instead build in pockets of downtime – moments to mingle, grab a drink and simply enjoy yourselves.

The same goes for your plans on paper: stay open to change, and don’t be afraid to adapt as things come together.

5. Don’t sweat the small stuff

It’s easy to get swept up in the tiny details, like the exact shade of the napkins, the precise wording on the place cards and those matching ties and pocket squares the groomsmen absolutely must have.

But the truth is, your guests won’t remember any of that. They’ll remember how the day felt. Focus your energy on the things that genuinely matter to you both, and let the rest go.

A relaxed wedding is one where ‘good enough’ is genuinely good enough. Get the venue and the people right, and everything else falls into place.

6. Lean on the experts

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Experienced venues and suppliers have done this hundreds of times and know exactly what works. Make the most of their knowledge – ask questions, take their advice and let them guide you.

Although you’ll want to find a relaxed, informal venue, you might still want to look for somewhere with a dedicated wedding coordinator though, and a team who’ll handle the set-up, timings and behind-the-scenes details so you don’t have to.

At Heaton House Farm for example, our coordinators know what works and what timings best keep the day flowing, and we can help keep things relaxed.

Our wedding planning guides are a great place to start, packed with tips to make your wedding planning checklist feel a whole lot lighter.

Don’t feel like you need to follow tradition

So much wedding stress comes from a feeling that there’s a ‘right’ way to do things. A timeline you’re supposed to stick to. Traditions you’re expected to honour. A long list of dos and don’ts handed down through generations of weddings past.

But don’t forget one important thing – it’s your day. There are no rules that say you have to do anything a certain way. You can add, ditch or create any part you want.

Not keen on a first dance in front of everyone? Skip it. Want to wear trainers under your dress, ditch the speeches or get married barefoot in a field? Go for it.

We’ve seen it all. Our coordinators are used to accommodating all kinds of plans, and our caterers will happily swap formal breakfasts for informal sharing plates or food stations.

When you let go of the idea that you have to follow tradition, planning a wedding suddenly becomes far less stressful, and far more you

That’s the heart of a relaxed wedding. It’s not about doing less; it’s about doing what feels right, without the pressure of expectation.

The importance of choosing the right venue

If there’s one decision that shapes how relaxed your planning feels, it’s your choice of venue.

The best venues do far more than provide a beautiful backdrop. They take care of the logistics that so often cause headaches – the seating, the lighting, the heating, the timings, the set-up and the clear-down.

When all of that is handled for you, you’re free to focus on the fun parts of planning a wedding rather than the fiddly ones.

A great venue also gives you flexibility. A blank slate that you can style your own way means you can create your own perfect vision for your big day, or just go with the natural look and feel of the venue – whatever makes for a more laid-back, low-stress day for you.

At Heaton House Farm, we’ve spent over 25 years helping couples bring relaxed, picture-perfect weddings to life.

We’ve got everything in place too, from underfloor heating and award-winning toilets to on-site accommodation and fully customisable lighting – all the details taken care of, so you can relax and just enjoy your once-in-a-lifetime day.

You decide what relaxed means to you

A relaxed wedding is all about enjoying yourself. Enjoying the planning, enjoying the run-up, enjoying the day itself.

Only you know what that looks like. What you want, and what you don’t. You decide which traditions you’ll keep and which you’ll drop. We’re just here to make it happen.

From your show-around to your final dance, we take care of every detail, so you can focus on what really matters. Whatever your dream of a relaxed, easy-going celebration looks like, we’ll help you bring it to life.
